This article describes the issues that are fixed in the Microsoft Word 2013 hotfix package that is dated October 8, 2013. There is insufficient memory or disk space. When trying to open a Word document or perform an action in Word, you may see an error message saying 'there is insufficient memory or disk space. Close extra windows and try again' or something similar. In some cases the message accurately describes the problem, but the error can happen even when your computer has plenty of RAM and hard drive space available.
If you don't have a real space shortage, resetting some of Word's options can remove the error. Before taking any other steps, make sure you have the latest operating system and Office updates and try rebooting your computer.
Checking Available Memory and Space
If you don't have enough disk space and random access memory free on your computer, even basic tasks can be slow or simply impossible to complete. In some cases, you might even try to display basic text and see a message that 'there is insufficient memory or disk space. Word cannot display the requested font.'
Before taking more drastic measures, make sure you actually have sufficient space on your hard drive for what you're trying to do. Press 'Windows-E' to open the Computer window and check the free space on your drive. Tap or click the 'This PC' icon.
Erasing Unneeded Files
If the bar indicating your drive's used space appears essentially full or is highlighted in red, your drive is almost full, and erasing unneeded files may help. Uninstall any unnecessary file and delete unused files, especially large files such as videos or music files. Back up any files you want to keep using a USB memory stick or a cloud service such as Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive or Google Drive.
To ensure you have enough RAM available, quit any other programs you have open and try using Word again. You may even sometimes see a message saying 'there is insufficient memory or disk space. Close extra Windows and try again.'
Running Microsoft Fix-It or Troubleshooting
On older versions of Windows, Microsoft offered a tool that automatically attempts to repair many problems with Word called Microsoft Fix-It. The software isn't available with newer versions of Windows but if you do have it on your system, you can still use it. Launch the program, click 'Next' and Fix-It will automatically check for problems and fix them. After it finishes, try running Word to see if the problem recurs.
With newer versions of Windows, you can use the built-in troubleshooting tool instead. Click the 'Start' menu and click 'Settings.' Click 'Update & Security' and then click 'Troubleshoot.' Follow the instructions to troubleshoot the problems you're having.
Deleting the Normal Template
The template file Normal.dot contains many of Word's default settings. If the template becomes corrupted, it can cause Word to behave erratically. Removing the file will force Word to create a new copy, potentially solving the error. Quit Word before attempting this fix.
Then, search your computer for copies of normal.dot and replace them. Use the search box in the Start Menu or the taskbar to search for 'normal.dot' and delete or rename each file that appears. You can rename the files to normal.bak if you are worried about deleting them and losing data.
Then, restart Microsoft Word to see if the problem is fixed.
Resetting Word's Registry Entries
Word stores many settings inside the Windows registry. Deleting these settings may resolve the problem, but incorrectly editing the registry can cause your computer to stop working, so proceed carefully and only if necessary. Type 'regedit' in the search box in the Start Menu or task bar and click the program's icon when it appears.
Using the folder list, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOfficexx.0Word, where 'xx' will display your version of Word. Right-click the 'Data' folder and pick 'Export' to save a backup of your current settings. Right-click the folder again and pick 'Delete.'
Open Word to check on the problem. If it still occurs, double-click the backup you exported to recover the settings, then perform the same procedure with the 'Options' folder rather than the 'Data' folder.
Insufficient Memory: Microsoft Word Mac
If you get a message about insufficient memory running Word on a Mac, the underlying causes are likely the same: too many programs running or too much disk space in use. Close open programs to free up RAM and see if it solves the issue.
To check your hard drive's free capacity, open the macOS Finder by clicking its icon on the Dock. Then, open the 'View' menu and makes sure 'Show Status Bar' is checked, clicking it if not. A status bar at the bottom of the window will show how much space if free.
If you're down to a handful of gigabytes or less space, try freeing up space by deleting unused software or data. Back up any data you're not sure whether you'll need.

Optimized Storage in macOS Sierra and later* can save space by storing your content in iCloud and making it available on demand. When storage space is needed, files, photos, movies, email attachments, and other files that you seldom use are stored in iCloud automatically. Each file stays right where you last saved it, and downloads when you open it. Files that you’ve used recently remain on your Mac, along with optimized versions of your photos.

Find out how much storage is available on your Mac
Choose Apple menu > About This Mac, then click Storage. This is an overview of available storage space on your Mac, as well as the space used by different categories of files:

The Storage Management window offers recommendations for optimizing your storage. If some recommendations are already turned on, you will see fewer recommendations.
Store in iCloud

Optimize Storage
Click the Optimize button, then choose from these options.
- Automatically remove watched movies and TV shows. When storage space is needed, movies or TV shows that you purchased from the iTunes Store and already watched are removed from your Mac. Click the download icon next to a movie or TV show to download it again.
- Download only recent attachments. Mail automatically downloads only the attachments that you recently received. You can manually download any attachments at any time by opening the email or attachment, or saving the attachment to your Mac.
- Don't automatically download attachments. Mail downloads an attachment only when you open the email or attachment, or save the attachment to your Mac.
Optimizing storage for movies, TV shows, and email attachments doesn't require iCloud storage space.
Empty Trash Automatically
Empty Trash Automatically permanently deletes files that have been in the Trash for more than 30 days.
Reduce Clutter
Reduce Clutter helps you to identify large files and files you might no longer need. Click the Review Files button, then choose any of the file categories in the sidebar, such as Applications, Documents, Music Creation, or Trash.
You can delete the files in some categories directly from this window. Other categories show the total storage space used by the files in each app. You can then open the app and decide whether to delete files from within it.

Where to find the settings for each feature
The button for each recommendation in the Storage Management window affects one or more settings in other apps. You can also control those settings directly within each app.
- If you're using macOS Catalina, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Apple ID, then select iCloud in the sidebar: Store in iCloud turns on the Optimize Mac Storage setting on the right. Then click Options next to iCloud Drive: Store in iCloud turns on the Desktop & Documents Folders setting. To turn off iCloud Drive entirely, deselect iCloud Drive.
In macOS Mojave or earlier, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click iCloud, then click Options next to iCloud Drive. Store in iCloud turns on the Desktop & Documents Folders and Optimize Mac Storage settings. - In Photos, choose Photos > Preferences, then click iCloud. Store in iCloud selects iCloud Photos and Optimize Mac Storage.
- In Messages, choose Messages > Preferences, then click iMessage. Store in iCloud selects Enable Messages in iCloud.
- If you're using macOS Catalina, open the Apple TV app, choose TV > Preferences from the menu bar, then click Files. Optimize Storage selects “Automatically delete watched movies and TV shows.”
In macOS Mojave or earlier, open iTunes, choose iTunes > Preferences from the menu bar, then click Advanced. Optimize Storage selects “Automatically delete watched movies and TV shows.” - In Mail, choose Mail > Preferences from the menu bar, then click Accounts. In the Account Information section on the right, Optimize Storage sets the Download Attachments menu to either Recent or None.
Empty Trash Automatically: From the Finder, choose Finder > Preferences, then click Advanced. Empty Trash Automatically selects “Remove items from the Trash after 30 days.”
Other ways that macOS helps automatically save space
With macOS Sierra or later, your Mac automatically takes these additional steps to save storage space:
- Detects duplicate downloads in Safari, keeping only the most recent version of the download
- Reminds you to delete used app installers
- Removes old fonts, languages, and dictionaries that aren't being used
- Clears caches, logs, and other unnecessary data when storage space is needed
How to free up storage space manually
Even without using the Optimized Storage features of Sierra or later, you can take other steps to make more storage space available:
- Music, movies, and other media can use a lot of storage space. Learn how to delete music, movies, and TV shows from your device.
- Delete other files that you no longer need by moving them to the Trash, then emptying the Trash. The Downloads folder is good place to look for files that you might no longer need.
- Move files to an external storage device.
- Compress files.
- Delete unneeded email: In the Mail app, choose Mailbox > Erase Junk Mail. If you no longer need the email in your Trash mailbox, choose Mailbox > Erase Deleted Items.

Deleting a duplicate file frees up only the space required by any data you might have added to the duplicate.
